Safe use of Essential Oils
*******************************************
Essential oils are highly concentrated, therapeutic agents with multiple benefits for mind, body and spirit. But bear in mind that they require respect and basic understanding of their applications.
Essential oils are used in increments of drops, and “less can be more” when working with pure aromatherapy oils. If you are under the supervision of a healthcare professional, please consult them before using aromatherapy essential oils.
As long as you bear this in mind, essential oils can be used by almost everyone, depending on the oil and the dilution. Remember also that the effect created is an interaction between the oil, the dilution, and the individual. Some people are more sensitive than others, and should exercise great caution.
In aromatherapy massage, essential oils are used externally in a dilution of carrier oils such as sweet almond oil, jojoba, organic sesame oil or organic sunflower oil. The normal dilution for a general body massage is 2% (i.e. approximately 6 drops in 15ml vegetable oil). Use a lower percentage is recommended for children and the elderly, and higher concentrations for topical application.
Below are some guidelines for use with babies and children:
0-12 months : Add 1-3 drops of essential oil in the diffusers. Avoid applying it directly.
1-3 years : The only oils that should be used - and in very small dilutions - are Lavender, Chamomile, Mandarin, Neroli, and Rose. Add 1 drop of essential oil to 2 tsp (= 20ml) of a vegetable oil such as sweet almond oil, sesame oil or jojoba oil for a massage.
3-6 years : You can introduce Orange, Coriander, Palmarosa, Tea Tree.
7-12 years : Most of the commonly used essential oils are now suitable but at a quarter of the dosage used with adults.
For considerations regarding specific essential oils, you may find the contraindications section in our product descriptions helpful.
Always keep essential oils out of the reach of children, and away from your eyes.
